Actor and director Rob Reiner found dead | Special Report

This is a CBS News special report. I'm Carissa Lawson in New York. We're following breaking news. The Los Angeles mayor's office and the California governor's office both confirm actor and director Rob Reiner

and his wife Michelle have died in a quote, tragic event. Sources tell CBS News the couple were found dead in their home in the West Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood. Los Angeles police say they discovered two bodies inside the home, although so far they have declined to confirm the identities. According to firefighters, the bodies were discovered inside the house. We have learned that detectives from the LAPD Robbery Homicide Division have been

assigned to this case. Paramedics were reportedly called to the scene around 340 this afternoon. Witnesses reported seeing a large police presence at the Reiner home on Sunday evening. Reiner was an award-winning actor, director, producer, writer, and political activist.

He first rose to nationwide prominence for his role in the CBS sitcom, All in the Family, playing the part of Michael Stivick, also known as Meathead. He won two Emmy Awards for his performance on the show. Reiner then went on to take up directing.

He was responsible for a string of highly acclaimed and culturally significant hit movies, among them Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men. His films earned one Oscar nomination and four Golden Globe nominations.

Just a few weeks ago, he spoke exclusively to Leslie Saul on 60 Minutes about his upcoming project, a remake of his 1984 directorial debut, This Is Spinal Tap. Over the span of his career, Reiner devoted considerable time and energy to political activism.

He was a co-founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which fought against California's ban on gay marriage. Rob Reiner was 78 years old. His wife, Michelle, was 68. The couple had three adult children together.
