Why don't you want to break your word to gas companies when it comes to introducing a 25 % tax on gas exports?

Well this is something that's just come from a social media campaign essentially.

The Australian Institute says it could raise 17 billion dollars a year.

Well the Australia Institute have run this campaign.But they need to be fair dinkum about it as well.Gas companies pay $22 billion of tax last year, that they pay royalties, that they pay company tax as well as PRRT.

support the Labor government.This idea is supported by Ken Henry, the former head of the Treasury, by Clive Palmer, who owns a coal mine, and by quite a number of Labor -backed benches and, of course, unions.This idea hasn't come from nowhere.The real problem the Prime Minister needs to get fair income about is that Australian beer drinkers pay more in beer excise than the government gets in its petroleum resource rent tax.The Prime Minister also says that the petroleum resource rent tax is going to go up.Well, let's be fair to him.

The budget papers show the opposite.The Australian Institute has never said the gas industry don't pay tax on on their enormous profits.The reason their profits are enormous is we give more than half of the gas we export away for free.And this idea that the gas industry pays some company tax, well let's get fair dinkum about that.Every company pays company tax when they make a profit, but bakers have to pay for flour whether they make a profit or not.But the gas industry doesn't have to pay for gas in Australia because the Commonwealth Government gives away so much of our gas for free.

At a time where Australians are being told we have to tighten our belts, the government, instead of getting a fair deal for Australians, is actually defending the gas industry that's been taking our gas and taking the piss for years.
