Convincing my wife the 3D printer was worth it (Part 5) #3dprinting #3dprint #diy #shorts #3dprinted
This is part 5 of trying to convince my wife my 3D printer wasn't a waste of money. Because she recently dropped the lid to her crock pot and shattered the handle. Let's 3D print something to fix that. Taking apart the lid we see that there is a screw along with this clear washer that seals it from the inside. And then on the handle side we see this brass colored threaded insert that is embedded into the plastic. I used a special method to remove it called brute-forcing it with all the wrong tools, which was a massive pain, but eventually we got it out
without dinging it up too badly. The original handle looked similar to this, but instead I used Tinkercad's revolve tool to sketch out a profile that I think would make for a better handle. I made it flat on the top so the lid can lay upside down without falling over and getting condensation everywhere. And I'm intentionally leaving a gap in between the handle and the glass, and holes in the top, so that water can't get trapped under there when washing the lid. The last thing we have to do is model the hole for the threaded insert.
I printed out a few test holes to get the fit just right, and then added it to our model, and we are ready for the final print. A lot of you have been big fans of the red color I've used for some previous projects, and I think it's going to match the crockpot absolutely perfectly. I'm just kidding, I'll be using some Jet Black PETG. This was my first time inserting hardware into one of my designs mid-print, and it was honestly pretty satisfying to pause the print, slide the threaded insert perfectly in the
slot, and then watch the printer continue printing right on top of it, locking it into place. Some quick support removal later, and we have our handle. Let's screw it all into place and then I'll reveal one more hidden feature that I added to this thing. The handle looks and works great and really looks like it's just part of the original
crock pot. And turn it around and you have a nice little clip to hold the meat thermometer so we don't have to lay it on the counter. have to lay it on the counter. The wife approves so we live to print another day.
