On this Monday night, the Ebola outbreak in one of the world's poorest countries. The struggle to contain this dangerous strain.

0:11

We were not yet prepared.

0:13

Why one doctor says the outbreak was detected too late.A tale of two springs in Canada from a chiller to a sizzler.

0:23

No complaints.

0:24

As intense storms tear through parts of the U .S.Oh my God!Oh my God!Revenge on Republicans, what the American president is doing to members of his own party who don't support him.Plus, pre -game jitters, the critical match -ups that have Montreal hockey fans anxious.

0:49

Good evening and thanks for joining us.We begin tonight with breaking news. There has been a shooting at a mosque in San Diego, California.Police say five people are dead, including two suspected shooters and three adult men, including a security guard who police say played a pivotal role in preventing more bloodshed.Police say two teenagers opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego.Aerial footage shows police responding with a heavy presence.

1:15

Dozens of patrol cars surrounded the complex.Armed officers were quickly on the scene, and a mom from the Islamic Center says all teachers, students, and other school staff members who are at the mosque are safe. The mosque is in a residential neighborhood of San Diego, about 14 kilometers north of the downtown core.

1:35

The suspects at this point appear to have died from self -inflicted gunshot wounds, with no officers involved in the shooting.firing their weapons. We got a lot of work to do to try to figure out what led up to this.

1:52

Police say it is being treated as a hate crime. They say the mother of one of the dead suspects had called police this morning telling them her son was suicidal, that he'd left her.note containing hate speech, and that weapons were missing from the home. The two male suspects are believed to be 17 and 19 years old. That Dutch cruise ship hit by an outbreak of Hantavirus has now returned to the Netherlands.25 crew members and two medical staff have now disembarked.

2:17

The ship's operator says none have symptoms. As a precaution, they will isolate in mobile homes set up nearby, equipped with food and satellite communications. The ship will be cleaned and decontaminated.Three passengers of the ship died. Two of them were confirmed to have Hantavirus. And a Canadian who was also on board later tested positive and is isolating in New York.

2:38

Of greater concern right now is an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The World Health Organization has declared it a public health emergency of international concern. At least 100 deaths have been reported and there are hundreds more suspected cases. And now an American doctor in the region has, according to the charity he works with, tested positive for Ebola.Vincent McAvini explains why this outbreak is deadlier than previous ones.

3:08

face masks, gloves and surgical scrubs. In all, 4 .7 tons of medical supplies from the World Health Organization bound for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. And this is just the start. The WHO isn't calling this outbreak of Ebola a pandemic yet, but they are describing it as an international health emergency.Congo is one of the poorest nations, beset by decades -long conflict, which adds to the challenge of trying to contain one of the world's most feared infectious diseases. In Ituri province, the epicenter of the outbreak, medical staff are well -versed in this virus, but they don't have the supplies needed to combat it.

3:51

Unfortunately, we are not yet prepared for this situation.and the difficulties lie in the fact that our infection, prevention and control supplies are insufficient. This outbreak involves the Bundy -Bugio strain, the least common Ebola variant.Because of its rarity, there are no approved vaccines, treatments or specific diagnostic tests. One of the scientists who discovered Ebola 50 years ago says that's why the alarm wasn't sounded early enough on this outbreak. This outbreak was detected very late, even too late.

4:23

Why?Because when the first cases appeared, they took samples and sent them to laboratories with specific cartridges for the Ebola Zaire variant. And so cartridges did not recognize Ebola Bundybugyo. These delays, combined with the long incubation period, up to 21 days, means the virus has already spread. There have been two confirmed cases and at least one death in neighboring Uganda. Some Ugandans are calling for the border to be closed to contain the spread, but the government is hesitant.

4:53

There's a lot of screening happening at the border because trade has to go on and people need to continue with their lives.

4:59

Neighboring nations like Rwanda and Tanzania say they're tightening screening on their border with the DRC.For now, this virus is contained in Central Africa, but past outbreaks have seen it cross continents.Vincent McAvinney, Global News, London.

This holiday Monday is a hot and humid one in Canada's largest city, and much of southern Ontario is under a heat warning, the first of the season.Sean O'Shea reports on the hot spell and how the city is taking extra precautions to keep people cool.

5:36

This is a nice change, actually.

5:38

Sunshine and heat, conditions the greater Toronto area hasn't seen in months.

5:43

I'm happy.Everyone can come and enjoy the weather.

5:47

But you're not complaining about the weather, considering the spring? Not at all.No complaints. The Toronto weather has gotten so warm, Environment Canada issued its first heat event of the year.

5:56

The last time the temperature was this warm in Toronto, you have to go back over nine months.

6:02

Environment Canada warned temperatures in Toronto and surrounding municipalities could reach 30 degrees. With humidity, it could feel like 36 degrees.

6:10

Looking forward to some good weather and, you know, people getting out and just enjoying join the city.

6:16

The sudden hot weather comes near the end of a cool spring and one of the most blustery winters in years that included a record snowfall.

6:23

With all of that snow, the cold that lingered well into spring and now all of a sudden, it is hot.

6:30

And while Toronto basks in heat, some parts of Canada, including Saskatchewan, got snow on the holiday weekend. Here, the City of Toronto activated its heat relief strategy, which involves opening cooling centres and making water available.

6:42

The fact that the city is starting to put water stations in, I think that's fantastic.

6:47

While complaining about the weather is common wherever you go...

6:49

When it becomes 35 degrees, it's too humid for me.

6:53

Today, though, most people you ask welcome the heat.

6:55

I think it's not too bad.

6:57

You like the summer?Summer hot weather?I love the summer.

7:00

Yes.As part of its strategy to help those who can't cope with the heat, the City of Toronto is running a pilot program to distribute a thousand portable air conditioners to low -income households that include at -risk seniors and those who are pregnant.Donna.

7:13

Okay, Sean O'Shea in Toronto.Thanks.Volatile weather is sweeping through parts of the U .S.Multiple tornadoes tore across Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas yesterday. There are no reports of any fatalities, but multiple structures were flattened or damaged.

People across the Midwest are bracing for more severe weather.46 million Americans remain at risk from intense storms from north Texas all the way to northern Michigan. The U .S.president doesn't have many vocal critics within the Republican Party and Donald Trump is doing all he can to remove the few that remain ahead of midterm elections in November.Who will run in those elections is being decided now in primaries.

7:59

And though President Trump's own approval ratings are low, he is intent on making sure only loyalists end up on the ticket.Jackson Prosko reports.

8:10

The president, the attorney general, the FBI director.

8:15

For standing with survivors of Jeffrey Epstein, Republican Thomas Massey now stands to lose his job.Thomas Massey is a disaster for our party.President Donald Trump has actively campaigned against the Kentucky congressman and endorsed his opponent over a perceived lack of loyalty.Trump told Republican supporters to vote the bum out ahead of Tuesday's primary.I think he's attacking me to keep the rest of these guys in line.Massey wouldn't be the first anti -Trump Republican to fall.

8:45

Thank you very much.Over the weekend, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy lost his primary in Louisiana.Trump turned on him over his support for impeachment after the January 6th attack on the U .

8:58

S.Capitol.And when you participate in democracy, sometimes it doesn't turn out the way you want it to.But you don't power. You don't whine. You don't claim that election was stolen.

9:09

Ahead of November's midterm elections, Republican primaries have become a test of Trump's influence.

9:15

You can disagree with President Trump, but if you try to destroy him, you're going to lose because this is the party of Donald Trump.

9:21

More often than not, Trump's picks still win. It's hard to find instances of a president kind of meddling so much in his own party's primaries. And again, he's really had a lot of success with it in terms of purging people from the party that he doesn't like.

9:36

Going all in on the president looks increasingly risky for the Republican Party.Polls show Trump's approval rating has sunk to a new low of just 37%.Dragged down by the war in Iran rising prices and a shaky economy.

9:50

You can't really talk your way out of these sorts of problems, but they're also a lot of danger signs for for Republicans here.

9:57

Less than six months out from the election, Trump's primary concern remains party loyalty. It may come at the expense of selecting candidates who can win over everyday Americans.Jackson Prosko, Global News, Washington.

The U .S.Undersecretary of Defense has announced his department is suspending a long -standing military advisory board it shares with Canada, the Permanent Joint Board on Defense.Elbridge Colby posted, Colby included a link to Prime Minister Mark Carney's Davos speech, saying, He said the post -Cold War world order led by the U .S.is over, and he called on middle powers to cooperate more closely or risk being dominated by larger powers.

10:52

The Joint Board of Defense was established in August of 1940 as an advisory body to both countries on continental defense.President Trump, who said the war the U .S.and Israel launched against Iran would be short, has again claimed serious negotiations are taking place to end it.The dispute is now into its 11th week. The ceasefire appears to be holding, but Iran continues to control the Strait of Hormuz, effectively closing that vital shipping route and limiting the supply of oil and natural gas to many countries.

11:25

Reggie Cicchini reports. With proposals moving back and forth, U .S.President Donald Trump claims to have called off an attack on Iran, saying serious negotiations are now taking place while suggesting re -negotiations.believe a deal will be made.It keeps a fragile ceasefire intact, but the war ongoing.

11:41

It really comes down to, does the Trump administration have the wherewithal and the ability to stick this out?

11:49

After the American president rejected Iran's latest proposal, it tried again, demanding among various items an end to sanctions, which may be a hard sell.

12:00

G7 and the rest of the world to follow the sanctions regime so that we can crack down on the illicit finance that is fueling the Iranian war machine.

In Iran, there remains a strong sense of defiance.State -sponsored rallies are being used to claim support for this oppressive government. We are winning the media war, this resident says. And the more Trump pulls back on his rhetoric, the stronger the country believes its hand is. I think that there were some unrealistic expectations. It's now obvious a war the White House wanted to win relatively quickly is dragging on and unresolved issues risk escalation, including Iran's missile program and nuclear ambitions.Tehran says they're pillars of the regime's survival, and giving them up is simply surrender.

12:45

If you pull out now, if you do a deal, then the regime remains.

12:49

Diminished but not defeated, Iran remains a threat. The Strait of Hormuz is still choked off, holding global energy markets hostage, and a U .S.blockade hasn't buckled Iran's economy.

13:00

And I believe the U .S.is developing.plans, in fact, has plans for military action to try to break the situation open.

13:09

While Trump is still holding the idea of a large -scale attack over the Iranians' heads, the regime has so far shown it won't be scared into submission.Reggie Cicchini, Global News, Washington.

15:30

The two provinces signed a memorandum of understanding in 2024 to rework the original contract, but negotiations have since stalled. As Heidi Petrochek explains, that framework is set to expire.

15:42

Heidi.Donna, there is a lot at stake here. For the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, it's billions of dollars in potential energy revenue. For Quebec, it's decades of reliable electricity.Long -time journalist Bob Wakeham doesn't mince words when describing the original hydroelectricity deal between Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec.

16:03

Any mention of the 1969 upper territorial contract really you know, pisses off most Newfoundlanders.

16:14

The Churchill Falls deal sold power to Hydro -Quebec at a fraction of market value, while Quebec reaped the profits. This is the 1969 contract, and we are endeavoring...It was a wrong meant to be righted by a memorandum of understanding between the two provinces penned in 2024, intended to bring billions into Newfoundland's coffers and secure long -term energy at the right price for Quebec. Then, a surprise election win by the provincial Progressive Conservatives upended it all, and the new Premier, sceptical of the agreement, ordered an independent review. Its findings set to be revealed Tuesday.

16:52

It's clearly always been and should always be about the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

16:56

Quebec's Premier, Christine Frechette, has said the memorandum is mutually beneficial.Bob Wakeham, no relation to Premier Wakeham, believes it's an opportunity lost if it doesn't go ahead.

17:15

And to leave those billions of dollars on the table, I can't reconcile that, you know.

17:21

The Prime Minister has said the federal government could help with negotiations between Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador.Whether it comes to that will largely depend on the Independent Review Committee's report.Donna.

17:33
