This is why Koreans and Japanese don't get along. It looks weird but there's a reason. First, Japanese meals are light. Rice in a light wooden bowl with fish, pickled vegetable, and a simple soup. Holding the bowl just keeps the rice from falling. So putting it down, eating like a dog.

But Korea is different. Korean used to get almost all their calories from rice. And to eat that much rice, they always had soup. So spoons were a must. With a spoon, you won't drop a single grain. So the bowl stays on the table.
