Oh, how the plot thickens.Jameson Greer, the United States trade representative, sat in Senate today and filled in a lot of gaps that make a whole lot more sense.Then Doug Ford went on American television to fight for Canada.He may have done the polar opposite, though.This was not good to watch.I'm Jasmine Lane.

Yeah, turns out there is a hero in this mess after all and it's not the Liberals which shouldn't surprise you at all.

Canadian or American can argue is the most important trade deal that each of us have.I want a trade agreement with the United States of America.They're our largest trading partner, have been for all of our life, yours and ours, and likely will be into the future.At the end of the day, why would you want to fight with your largest trading partner regardless of what they're saying?We need this trade agreement.

Speaking of purity tests, that was a great example of one.Did you hear that, reporter?See, this is the problem where pride and ego get confused with strength or results.You don't want to fight, elbows down.Well, there's a very big difference between fighting and fixing, right?

I feel sorry for Americans.If you can't be friends with Canada, then you almost certainly do not have a friend anywhere in the world.And that is a very lonely place to be.

It is really bizarre, the mental gymnastics and a lack of self -awareness that Premier Eby would have.This is the same guy.calls everybody who disagrees with him an istorophobe, a mega this, mega that.He has said some terribly arrogant and rude things to people who didn't deserve it plenty of times.And this is something I reflect on a lot.If you even think about Canadian culture and our reputation 10 years ago compared to today, What happened to us?

I mean, we all know what happened to us, but like, look at the data, you know, not the mythology.The mythology is that Canada is really nice and everybody wants to be our friend.Well, a decade ago, Canada ranked number six on the world happiness report.Today, we are number 25.It's actually the worst showing in the 14 years the world happiness report has existed.The sharpest decline of any advanced economy on earth.

Nice people, don't fall like that in happiness because happy, secure, and confident countries don't post the steepest happiness collapse of any developed nation on earth.Something happened and it wasn't an accident and it had nothing to do with Donald Trump.It was the juxtaposition between the self -image that people prop up and the actual data.And to have David Eby go on television and say he feels sorry for Americans, for not wanting to be friends with us?This, coming from a political culture that has spent the last several years vilifying, mocking, and insulting Donald Trump, as well as half the country who doesn't vote liberal or NDP, because we disagree?Because we have other ideas?

Because we want results and outcomes matter?Because we've looked at the charts that you never talk about, and we see the data, and we know that what's happening is not working right now?We're not crazy.We're not misinformed.We just have the courage to be honest, to tell it like it is and to say it.to your face, we don't believe you because you have proven time and time again that you are a party, are a man, an ideology of no substance, no convictions, no grounding reality.

And sure, you know, people like David Eby and his followers and the many of them that exist in this country that keep voting for decline, You can hollow out any position as much as you want.You can flatten the nuance.You can ignore history.But just because you're loud and vicious with your tongue doesn't make you right.

Now, the president issued some paper today.The White House did.You can look at it at the White House website.The areas he was really concerned about were motor vehicles, alcohol and dairy.And I think they do make a pretty compelling case that the Canadians have unfairly singled out those industries in the United States for unfair trade practices.That is the stated reason for the tariffs today.

Now, going on in the background here is also that I guess we're currently renegotiating or trying to renegotiate the USMCA, although I think we're talking to Mexico and not the Canadians at the moment.You would hope that in the outcome of all this, the Canadians would not unfairly target things in the United States like dairy and alcohol and motor vehicles.What was true remains true today.The president believes in his authority to tariff.He believes tariffs are not used enough.He believes tariffs give him economic leverage, but also diplomatic and negotiating leverage.

I assume that's part of what's going on here as well.That was his attitude before.It's his attitude today.And I have no reason to believe he's ever going to change.

Unlike some of the tariffs last year that the court invalidated, I think correctly, It's pretty clear that he has the authority.This particular tariff is a legal tariff.It's a retaliatory tariff.It is true that Canada is imposing pretty high tariffs on the United States.And Trump's whole strategy...I'm a free trade guy I'd love to see Canada Mexico the United States be just one big free trade zone, but it is true that Canada is Is discriminating against American products and Trump has for better or worse and in some cases were better He has used America's leverage to to force other countries like Canada to comply.

The tariffs they put on American dairy products are outrageous.And I bet, I bet in the next three or four weeks, I'll bet you that Canada will back down here.

There's this saying, it's, you know, when pride comes, then comes disgrace.But with humility, comes wisdom, which is, you know, to break that down a little bit for you.It's when a person becomes overly self -confident, arrogant, or thinks too highly of themselves, they set themselves up for failure or humiliation in some cases and disgrace.

Donald Trump has been so bad at managing the American economy.He's raised the price of gas with his war in Iran more than we could ever raise.by changing our exports.So we just have to kind of choose our spots, pick our battles.So I think tools like the booze ban, maybe some other measures that the federal government wants to put on the table, I think those would be the places to look.

I don't know why the people involved in the last negotiations continued to preach that it worked.It almost failed, dramatically.So they should stop saying that.It's just not true.There's no evidence that any of that retaliation works for Canada.

But if you're humble, and you have a realistic and grounded view of yourself, you have a lot of self -awareness, your heart is then open for guidance, correction, or learning from your mistakes.That saying comes from Proverbs 11, 2.Thank you, sir.

So I have to ask you, I know you're always complimentary about how you care about the American people and you're fond of the United States, but are you trying to inflict pain on Americans, to make your point?

The president started this economic war against their closest friend and ally.Every Canadian, we love Americans.I love Americans.Spent 20 years of my life there.But again, I differentiate between President Trump and the great American people.I believe in making a free and fair trade agreement.

no different than what Ronald Reagan believed in.And every tariff he puts on Canada, it's a massive, massive tax on Americans.We're the number one customer.We buy more goods off the U .S.than any other jurisdiction in the world.

Motor vehicles, we buy 400 % more vehicles off the U .S.than any country in the world.I want a fair deal.I want prosperity.Americans want certainty.

They want stability.And right now, when there's not certainty and stability, investment is stalled, but when there's investment, we see investment and jobs and production and lower cost of goods.You see what's happening in the U .S.Cost of gas is going up, cost of building homes, because he has tariffs on the softwood lumber, 33 % of all the lumber used is coming from Canada.Again, he's attacking Canada.

and when you attack your closest friend and ally that's been shoulder to shoulder with you for over 200 years, fought wars together, that's unacceptable.We have to work together and make sure both countries prosper and thrive.

I really wish that it wasn't like explaining algebra to a two -year -old, but it also does show us exactly how hollow all of this has been from the get -go.Because for the last year and a half, Canada's posture has been, we don't need them.F -America, mega, Trump, fascist.We had no King's protests in Canada.

How Canadians view the United States, a threat or cautiously in 2024, it was just 26%.Ally or friend, 73%.Now these numbers, Inverse, flip around the Rosie, look at this, okay.Now 74%, look at that, up nearly 50 points now say, Canadians say that the US should be viewed as a threat or cautiously.

And I really want you to think about the level of propaganda your citizens must see and hear in order to actually take time off work, if they have a job at all, to protest no kings against Donald Trump in downtown Toronto.especially considering the fact that Canada actually does have a king.

But Mark Carney doesn't want a deal because fighting with Donald Trump is too politically valuable for him.It's too politically valuable for Doug Ford, for David Eby.They enjoy it.They know that there is a large section of the Canadian population and it's spread right across this country.It's all the people that voted for Mark Carney that are excited about him, that think he's great.His approvals rating hasn't been higher.

They all love him fighting with Donald Trump.Most of them retired.And so losing your job at the local plant because trade with the U .S.is drying up doesn't affect them.They're living off their retirement savings, which is heavily invested in the S &P 500 in New York.

You know, Canadians love to talk about our sovereignty, forgetting, of course, that your sovereignty is actually your economy.

We're keeping the market access in Canada and Mexico.I talked with my Canadian counterpart yesterday.They did not say they're going to retaliate.

And they love to talk about how strong we are and how much better we are than the Americans.However, we are absolutely none of those things.We are not powerful.If we were, we would not be behaving like this.This isn't how power behaves.Read a self -help book.

It'll tell you that in the first paragraph.And deep down, Everybody knows it.That's why they're so insecure.That's why they talk about it constantly.It's just on loop in their head because it's true.that they actually don't have anything.

That's why Canadians are so mad.Sorry for saying that.For Donald Trump to say, oh, well, you know, Canada needs the US.That's true.Actually, data would prove that.I don't care if it hurts your feelings.

It is what it is, bro.And if you're mad about it, go complain about the federal government for putting you in this position over the last 11 years.

As a country, we can handle an honest conversation.If we're still smoking cigarettes in 2026, what are we doing?And yes, the quitting conversation has happened a million times across kitchen tables, in public health campaigns, in communities everywhere.But this isn't the only conversation we need to be having.Here's the reality.If you don't smoke, don't start.

The mill towns, the forestry workers, the households absorbing the tariffs on both sides of a fight that the government picked with its mouth.and not a plan.And then the moment that we're actually confronted by the same person who we've been talking about behind his back for a year and a half, who's tired of this weak, annoying little cousin who keeps trying to get in and shoot hoops with all of the older cousins.Get out of here, dude.We fold immediately.And when we fold, we're the victims.

Oh, Trump is such a bully.Suddenly we're the nice guys.being attacked for no reason at all.You do not get to spend 18 months pretending that you don't need somebody and trying to prove to yourself with nothing but your words that you don't need somebody and then act shocked and wounded when they say, yeah, okay, we believe you, good luck.

If you, if at this point, 10 years into the Trump situation, you are still obsessed withabout his personality, my view is that's on you.Should we always be criticizing, as I do, what he actually does while he's in office?Absolutely.But to keep just focusing on these personality things that we've talked about for 10 years.They're not gonna change.

That's who he is. I don't care when he calls me names now.It's like the way he does it.It's the way he talks.It's who he is.Of course he's gonna hang a tarp on the building.He does these things which you can't even imagine.

If you tried your hardest, what is he gonna do now?Tarp on the building would never have come to me, but he is always gonna do it.And when he does it, I just gotta go, Okay.Yeah.Low plate.Yeah.

This is what you do.

Yeah.

And as long as it's something that doesn't really affect me or other people, for real.

Yeah.

I don't care about your reflecting pool.I don't care about your ballroom.I don't care what you do on the lawn.You can have UFC fights.You can have sheep grazing there like one president did.You can do anything.

Pickleball.I don't give a shit what you do on the lawn.And if you're a person who does, you're just way too into Donald Trump as the person who controls how you think in life.Everything is about him.I'm not going there with you.And I'm winning.

all agree on this, objectively, that in life you encounter people all the time who tell you that they're the best at XYZ, that they're really nice, they're a really good person.Those people you should run from because the people who announce it are the opposite of what they claim to be.

I try to be an optimist about Canada because we're the wealthiest country on earth per capita in terms of what everybody in the world wants, including energy, rare minerals, water, paper, you name it, energy.And unfortunately, there's no other way to put it because the numbers tell the story.Over the last decade, we've been in an economic coma because of bad policy, bad management, bad government, bad decisions.And I really don't need to say more.than I have about Justin Trudeau.I've given him the name the Idiot King, and I believe that shows respect, actually, because he was very successful in terms of how long he ruled with absolutely no executional skills, but he was an idiot.

And so both are true at the same time, and I mean no disrespect when I say that.And a lot of people have you know, said to me, how can you disrespect the Prime Minister?And I said, I can tell the truth, and you can read the numbers.And here we are, the bottom of the G20, by every measure you want, after 10 years.

Canada has been trying to tell the world we're the best and the nicest for years.How's that going for us?Perhaps it's time we noticed the people who actually are and don't have to announce it.

I firmly believe that the Conservative Party of Canada's messaging with this needs to shift dramatically and that's not to say that it's not true.Indeed, when Donald Trump coughs too hard, we feel the ripple effects here in Canada.What's the underlying cause?Because again, the impact of Trump tariffs is not the cause.It is the symptom of a weakened economy over the last 11 years.

We will lose the automotive manufacturing industry.The president of that industry said only two weeks ago, if we don't have tariff -free access for exports of cars, manufactured cars, we are going to exit the industry like Australia did in 2017.So we must have an agreement with the United States with as few tariffs as possible.The U .S.is over 10 times larger.

They're over 32 trillion GDP in U .S.dollars.We're about just over 2 trillion, 2 .5 trillion in U .S.dollars.

We are much more dependent when you look at the actual percentages of GDP.We are far more dependent on the United States than the United States is on us.

You can say all the things.Trump tariffs are unfair.This is cruel.It's awful.He's picking on us.He's a bully.

You can say whatever the heck it is that you want.Our industries are hurting.We are suffering.Look at what happened to us as a result of this.You can say so many different things and all of them or some of them may all be true at the same time.At the end of the day, the square reason for each and every single one of those symptoms is the cause.

The cause is what this government has done to our country over the last decade plus.The cause is this government actively obstructing for political purposes, actively poking the bear for political purposes here domestically.at the expense of all of the people who are suffering and will continue to suffer.

I can see just like everybody else that Americans are frustrated with the rising cost of living.Today's tariffs are going to make their lives more expensive again.and demolishing Kuzma, if that's where the president's heading, is going to destroy businesses in the United States and hurt Americans as well, while he's going into a sensitive election cycle.So, you know, I think that the opportunity is potentially there for us to resolve this.I hope it is. I'm sure this is the president looking for a win, but he's also, to my mind, a wounded animal right now, who is lashing out at friends and neighbors for inexplicable reasons.

Winners win and losers lose.And I am so tired of being represented by loser victim mentality.I'm tired of it.If Trump's words and actions make you angry, that's insecurity.That's not patriotism.Real strength does not flinch.

If we are not stronger than the United States of America, despite having everything in the world to be, That's not Donald Trump's fault.That is squarely the liberal government and now Mark Carney's fault.That's it.So stop demanding that Trump be nicer and start demanding results from your own government.It's not that hard.Anyway, I'm Jasmine Lane.
