One person has united Italy across the political spectrum
President Trump is uniting the people of Italy against him. Even the local newspaper described it as a moment of Italian unity against the unpredictable man of the White House. So what happened? Follow me, I'll tell ya. Up until very recently, the far-right Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Maloney, and President
Trump got along pretty well, even when Trump was being kind of creepy.
She's a beautiful young woman. Now if you use the word beautiful in the United States, that's the end of your political career, but I'll take my chances. You don't mind being called beautiful, right?
Then it all went south, in part thanks to Vice President Vance. Last week, Vance traveled to Hungary where he endorsed the far-right Prime Minister, Viktor Orban. Orban swiftly lost the re-election,
and Vance's endorsement was largely seen as the kiss of death. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Maloney is up for re-election next year and it's suspected that the Hungary election is one of the many reasons she's looking to move away from Trump. So on Sunday when President Trump said that the Pope was weak on crime, amongst other things, Maloney was quick to call that unacceptable. And in response, President Trump said that she is the one who is unacceptable. Not his best comeback.
On Tuesday, Vice President Vance doubled down on the remarks. I think it's very, very important for the Pope to be careful when he talks about matters
of theology.
With the tensions over the White House's ongoing comments on the Pope looming large, Italy announced that it was suspending its renewal of a defense agreement with Israel. This did not sit well with Trump, who is strongly aligned with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. So much so that he apparently agreed to attack Iran in February after Netanyahu made a hard sell on a joint U.S.-Israeli mission.
Israel had convinced Trump with a short video montage of potential leaders that could take over for Iran. Essentially, it was a commercial to invade a country. I can't imagine being that suggestible. So as Italy distanced itself from the US and Israel, the country has been united, if briefly, I can't imagine being that suggestible.
