Reality of E20 Petrol! | Is Ethanol Good or Bad? | Dhruv Rathee
Dhruv Rathee
Hello friends! The Modi government has suddenly rolled out E20 fuel all over the country. This fuel has 80% petrol and 20% ethanol. But the surprising thing is that people have not been given any option. Whether you want it or not, you have to get this in your car or two-wheeler. And what's even more surprising is that who has benefited the most from this?
A powerful union minister is in the government, whose two sons are the owners of the ethanol sugar plants. On the other hand, the biggest loss is being caused by the common people. This is why it is being called a big scam on social media. Let's understand the whole story of this E20 fuel in today's video, friends. First, let's understand the logic behind mixing ethanol in petrol.
Chemically, ethanol is the same alcohol that is found in liquor bottles. This alcohol can also be used as a biofuel. Alcohol can be made from many different food items. As I explained in the video on alcohol, any food item that contains starch or sugar can be fermented to make alcohol.
But in the context of biofuels, we use sugarcane, corn and rice to make alcohol. Sugarcane is the most effective of these. Because in the crop of sugarcane, the highest sugar yield is per acre. And the crops like corn and rice are grown abundantly in India.
So the food that goes bad, those crops can also be used to make ethanol. Now, the thing is, because chemically, it's the same thing that's being put in liquor bottles, people can use it like alcohol.
So that people don't do this, some other poisonous things are added to biofuel ethanol, like methanol. Or some petroleum products, which people don't use to drink. But in the context of biofuel,
scientists have found that ethanol mixes well with petrol. And it works like an oxygenator. Which burns the petrol well. Many research papers show that ethanol has less air pollution than petrol. According to an analysis by Niti Aayog, ethanol made from sugarcane has 65% less greenhouse emissions than petrol.
Apart from this, petrol is made from crude oil. And the prices of crude oil keep fluctuating in the world, according to geopolitical scenarios. Often, countries have to spend lakhs and crores of rupees to import crude oil from other countries. That also costs a lot. But on the other hand, ethanol is something that can be made from the crops in the country.
These are the two biggest reasons why many countries around the world mix ethanol in petrol. In India, since January 2003, ethanol blended petrol is being sold. About 22 years ago,
only 5% ethanol in petrol. But the progress was slow in the beginning. By 2014, the average ethanol blending had reached only 1.5%. In 2014, within a month of BJP's government's arrival, the ethanol blending limit was reduced from 5% to 10%. In 2018, the government set a new target
that by 2030, there would of 20% ethanol blending by 2030. But this target was pre-poned later and a new date was set for 2025. And this is why in March 2025, the government achieved this target and rolled out E20 fuel throughout the country.
India has introduced E20 petrol adding 20% ethanol nationwide, 5 years ahead of schedule.
Everything sounds good, it sounds like a success story. But as soon as E20 rolled out, people started complaining. Our government has done a great job, but I will never forgive you for this. Yesterday I had filled up the tank for Rs 3,500, it's literally half now. My car's mileage was 12, now it's 9.5 My mileage was 12 km before. It has reduced to 9.5 km. And because of what? Only because of the E20 fuel launch.
It's obvious, friends, that no one will like it that suddenly, you're getting less value for more money. I can't control this thing. Many people have started saying on social media that their car's mileage is declining. Their car parts are getting damaged. The government had said that when ethanol blended petrol will be introduced, the prices of petrol will also fall, which we haven't seen yet.
The parts will stop getting damaged. Why? Because the needle inside the carburetor is swollen. Because of what? Because there is ethanol in the petrol. If the fuel of the car with less running is kept inside a non-E20 compliant vehicle,
then such issues will arise. non-E20 compliant vehicles, there will be some issues. The big reason for this is that there are very few E20 compliant cars in the Indian market. If ethanol blended petrol is put in a car whose fuel system is not made to handle it, then by doing this repeatedly, the chances of the fuel system getting damaged increases.
This happens because ethanol attracts water molecules towards itself. And gets attached to them. So if you don't use your car daily, and the fuel tank is filled with ethanol blended petrol, then the water in the fuel tank will start accumulating. And the possibility of getting a concussion will increase.
Some particles of this concussion can mix with the fuel and go into the fuel line. And block the fuel line. The water that comes from the ethanol can also damage the rubber components, pipes and filters in the fuel system. Apart from this, some other contaminants can also come with the water. Which start accumulating in the engine. And this can weaken the engine's performance.
All this is valid for those vehicles whose fuel system is not made to handle ethanol blended fuel. But obviously, the fuel system can be modified here. Such components can be used that don't get contaminated. Such components that are waterproof
and don't affect the contaminants. But the problem is that in today's country, most of the vehicles are either E5 or E10 compliant. Most of the companies started making E20 compliant vehicles in 2023. Because of this, these old vehicles will give less mileage when they use E20 fuel. The reason is that ethanol generates 30% less energy than petrol.
The more ethanol in petrol, the less energy the engine gets. And the mileage also decreases. The government says that this mileage drop is not very high. According to the policy, the mileage of E E10 designed and E20 calibrated cars is only 1-2% less. And the mileage of the other cars is 7% less.
But people are saying that it's not true. Vehicle owners say that in real-life conditions, the mileage of E20 is decreasing a lot. In a survey of 36,000 people in local circles, 2 out of 3 people said that their car's mileage has decreased. 44% said that their car's mileage has decreased by more than 10%.
Like this person said that due to E20 fuel, his Volkswagen Vento car's mileage has decreased from 10 km per litre to 6 km per litre. In the last 6 months, he has not given a mileage below 8. Now, I will show you the mileage. 6.3. 6.3.
The reason is E20 petrol.
Many people are facing similar problems. And the price of petrol has not decreased here. If you buy E20 petrol at the same price and your mileage decreases so much, it means that your petrol expense has increased by 40% every month. The government says in its defence that, look, in Brazil, E27 fuel is being used.
No one had any problem there. But the thing is that Brazil started working on ethanol blending in the 1970s. They have slowly reached E27. And before reaching E27 fuel, he made his cars ethanol compatible. He gave people time.
He didn't force them to buy new cars. In India, E10 petrol was available in the country 3 years ago. And within 3 years, E20 petrol was available. In any country in the world, there hasn't been such a fast transition from E10-E20 has not seen such a fast transition. And this is because you cannot force everyone to buy new cars.
Like Brazil, even in India, no one had a problem with the introduction of E10 fuel. Because E10 compliant cars were being made since 2008. But E10 fuel was introduced in 2022. So the simple fact is that the majority of people were forced to buy new cars. Now, the government says in its defense that the E10 compliant cars,
if you replace some rubber parts in them, then the fuel system can be made suitable for E20 petrol. And these parts are not too expensive. But the definition of too expensive is a bit controversial.
A Maruti Suzuki E20 kit can cost up to Rs.6,000. Components like fuel injectors can cost up to Rs.14,000. And things like fuel pump and fuel tank can cost up to Rs.35,000. Another big question here is that if E20 fuel spoils some parts of your car, if something happens to the car, who will cover it?
Every car's manual tells you which fuel to use. If you don't use that fuel, the warranty can expire. Like in this person's Hyundai vehicle's manual, it is written that don't use more than 10% ethanol petrol. And if it causes any damage, then the warranty will not be covered. Renault company has advised its 2022 driver vehicle
not to use E20 fuel in it. Because the vehicle has not been tested for E20 fuel. But now the same company, after a reference from the government, says that in E10 compatible cars, there was no damage from E20.
So, Renault cars should not face any serious issues. Similarly, Toyota also said that the warranty for E20 petrol should be terminated in its urban cruiser. But now Toyota is also saying the government's study and saying that it won't face a big loss in its cars due to E20.
Due to this constant flip-flop, a lot of confusion has been created. And people are not able to understand whether to believe the company's manuals, their old statements or their new tweets. The same confusion is spread about insurance. The government says that the insurance of E20 fuel will not be affected. But the news reports say that in India,
most of the standard motor insurance won't cover the damage caused by the wrong fuel. Like the insurance provider ACKO India said that if the wrong fuel is used, the engine will be damaged and the insurance won't be provided. But later, they deleted this tweet. In all this, the government is still adam insurance is not available. But later, he deleted this tweet. In all this, the government is still adamant on its point and tells three reasons behind this decision.
First, ethanol is eco-friendly. The government says that compared to E20 and E10, there are 30% less carbon emissions. This is true, friends. To verify this, you will get many international research papers. Second, by adding ethanol in petrol,
the money spent on crude oil import is saved. Because of ethanol, India has had to import 193 lakh tonnes of crude oil less than before. In total, 1.36 lakh crore rupees are saved. The dependence on foreign countries due to ethanol blending is also decreasing because India still imports
85% crude oil from other countries. And the third benefit is that it benefits the farmers because the companies that make ethanol buy sugarcane and corn from the farmers. According to the government, since 2014, the farmers have earned Rs 1.18 lakh crore. Now if you ask me, these three benefits are right. What the government is saying all three are valid. The government is saying that using E20 fuel is a big advantage for the country.
But the question is, are you giving this benefit to the consumers or just harming the public? When the Modi government was introducing E10, in 2018, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that after adding ethanol, petrol will be priced at Rs 55 per litre. Whatever happens in the jungle, and by segregating the waste, it will become your garbage.
Petrol and diesel will be reduced. And in Rs 50 per litre, diesel will be available. And in Rs 55 per litre, petrol will be available at Rs 55 per litre. Then in 2023, Nitin Ghatkari even talked about getting petrol at Rs 15 per litre.
If the average of 60% ethanol and 40% electricity is caught, then petrol will be worth Rs 15 per litre. It will be good for the people.
He said that if cars run on 60% ethanol and 40% electricity, then petrol will be at. 15 per litre. The Modi government has once again fooled the public. They have played a game with the public. In 2021, the Politburo also recommended that the petrol with ethanol should be sold at a low price. But the government did not agree.
Apart from this, there are questions about Nit Nitin Gadkari's conflict of interest. Here, the accusation of corruption is being laid. In Maharashtra, there are many sugar plants of the Gadkari family. By its by-product, ethanol is produced. In the initial companies that used ethanol manufacturing plants in India, Purti Group's Purti Power and Sugar Limited were also included.
Its founder was Nitin Gadkari. Actually, friends, Gadkari was lobbying for ethanol even before becoming a minister. In December 2013, when the sugar mills companies asked the government to implement 10% ethanol blending after a meeting, Nitin Gadkari was the chief patron of that meeting. After that, in 2014, when the Modi government came,
as soon as the government became a minister, Nitin Gadkari started lobbying to make the ethanol blending limit 10-15%. At that time, even 2% of the ethanol was not being blended. And it's amazing, as Nitin Ghatkari said, the Modi government did the same.
Within a month, the ethanol blending limit was made 10%. Doing this was very beneficial for the Purti Group's business. At the same time, in June 2014, they announced the setup of a new plant of ethanol. Later, two companies of this Purti Group were formed. Manas Agro Industries and CIAN, Cian Agro Industries. These two companies are run by the two sons of Nitin Gatkari, Sarang Gatkari and Nikhil Gatkari. Both these companies are in the business of ethanol. Sarang Ghatkari's Manas Group was producing 2 crore litres of ethanol by 2022.
And it supplies ethanol to be mixed in petrol. Nikhil Ghatkari's C.I.N. Agro had also signed an MOU to produce ethanol from carbon dioxide in 2024. This company is publicly listed and in the last 5 years, its revenue growth has been 37.55% per year. While the industry average is only 7%. And their net income is 62.43% every year. While the industry average is 14%. This means that this company is growing 5 times faster than the rest of the industry.
In the last year, its share price has increased by more than 1000%. The biggest thing is that Nitin Gadkkari himself is not the Petroleum Minister but he has been promoting and lobbying for the whole time. He has been telling the government to use ethanol, to use ethanol and his own sons were running the company of ethanol. Actually, Nitin Ghatkari has been given the Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways.
And what has been done in that? In the last few years, we have seen a lot of PR. Look at the highways built in the country. How much development has happened. He used to become a hero in the podcast.
In 2022, Nitin Gadkari said that by 2024, India's roads will be like America. Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, before 2024 ends, before the end of the year, India's road infrastructure will be equal to that of America.
I promise you.
And look at the condition of the roads. The bridges start breaking in just one rain. The highway in Madhya Pradesh, which is worth Rs. 1,600 crores, started breaking before it was completed. Look at the condition of it in the rain.
Now look at this Amritsar-Jamnagar highway, which was also advertised by the Modi government had also put up big ads. Just see what has happened to it after a few months of the construction being completed. Similarly, NH44 was stuck in Telangana. In Gujarat, there were big holes on Surat-Mumbai National Highway. But no one is going to see them. And I am not just single out Nitin Ghatkari here.
Look at the condition of every minister in the Modi government. Whether it is the Finance Minister or the Foreign Minister, Environment Minister or Finance Minister, the Foreign Minister, the Environment Minister or the Education Minister, if any field is doing well, let us know. The public is not getting anything, but look at the sons of these BJP leaders. Home Minister Amit Shah's son Jai Shah, neither can he speak Hindi nor English.
But he has taken over the full control of Indian cricket. In October 2019, he became the chairman of the International Cricket Council, starting with the secretary of the BCCI. Jayshah has also grown his own business. His company Kusum FinServ LLP's income increased by 14,925% between 2014 and 2019. His net worth increased by 25 times. From 1.21 crores to 25.83 crores.
And you tell me, what talent and skills did he use to achieve this? Similarly, look at the case of late Arun Jaitley. Who was a Union Minister. For 14 years, he was the President of Delhi District Cricket Association. And since 2020, his son Rohan Jaitley has become its President. Look at the case of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
His son Pankaj Singh is the President of the Cycle Federation of India. External Affairs Minister S. Jai Shankar, his son Dhruva Jai Shankar, is the US Head of the Observer Research Foundation. He is a policy think tank supported by Reliance. But the story of father-son is very long, friends. If it was any other party, there would be a line of nepotism and corruption scandals.
There would be headlines in the media. But what to do? The Godi media won't show you these news. We have diverted from the topic a bit here. We have come back to the story of E20 fuel. So, overall, this is a good thing, friends.
But the point here is about intention and implementation. The government's intentions are bad and the implementation is a failure. The transition that Brazil has done in 50 years, the same transition is being forced on the people in India in 5 years. And that too without proper infrastructure. The government had to do only 3 things and no one had any problem.
First, people should have been given time. If they had done it on the original date of 2030, no one would have had any problem. Because by then, it would have been 7 years since E20 compliant vehicles had arrived. Second, it is very clear that
using ethanol saves the government money. So this benefit should have been passed on to the consumers. The price of petrol should have come down. Third, people should have been given a choice. Should they buy 100% petrol or ethanol blended petrol? If ethanol blended petrol was cheaper, obviously, most people would have been bought. 100% petrol or ethanol blended petrol. If ethanol blended petrol was cheaper,
obviously, most people would have bought it. But even such simple things were not done by the government because the government has now started taking you for granted. Maybe they know that if you have to win the election by stealing votes, then why waste time in convincing the public. I hope you found the video informative.
