Hi everybody, welcome to That's Football, I'm Mark Goldbridge.I bloody love the summer transfer window and this story around Liverpool and Arsenal absolutely epitomises this.Bayern Munich, according to David Ornstein, want to sign Rio, the 17 -year -old prodigy from Liverpool.Incredible, incredible. And you would instantly say they've got no chance, but they're about to be subjected to a huge bid from Real Madrid for a lice.So play this scenario out.
Real Madrid, give Bayern Munich silly money for a lycee and then Bayern Munich give Liverpool silly money for Rio.Can it happen?Well, David Ornstein's talking about it, so we're going to talk about it.Also, Alvarez to Arsenal updates on that could be a little bit of a setback there.Remember what I was talking about yesterday as well, some really interesting in the comments talking about is the Premier League starting to drop off a little bit.The quality wasn't great last season, and it seems like bigger players in Europe, PSG and Real Madrid, for example, even Barcelona, are moving quicker and more ambitiously.
It'll be interesting to see how the summer transfer window plays out because there seems to be a domino effect here that's going to tumble down.Excited, though.Let's get into it.And of course, remember, I'm live at nine o 'clock tonight for England against New Zealand. It's a preview. It's a preview.
It's a pre -World Cup friendly. We're World Cup ready on that spot. We'll make sure you're subscribing and getting involved.Loads going on with the World Cup.But we won't be taking our eye off transfers as well.Big season for so many teams next season in the Premier League and in Europe as well.
And this is what David Ornstein had to say.
attack rather than weaken it but look fortune favors the brave i've said this about man united like you know do we want this fernandez from west ham or are we going to sit back and go we don't want to we don't want to have a fight with people like psg and arsenal uhReal Madrid. My initial thoughts are Liverpool will not do this.Liverpool Football Club, whatever I think about them, you know, they would not have Anfield knocked down to build a new stadium next to it, Manchester United. They would not have the Glazers in charge for as long as they have done, Manchester United.
They have principles, they have morals, and they would be uproar if, you know, Salah's retiring, Diaz wasn't replaced, Robertson's gone. They are not...The one positive for Liverpool, I think, from last season, beyond Sir Bosley, was Rio.
And, like...I saw him come on at Old Trafford back in May.Very, very exciting. And I saw a lot of Liverpool last season.I thought they were very poor, you know, very pragmatic, very slow, very boring. This player for 17 is exciting.
You know, Liverpool are not going to do this deal.
I can't see Liverpool doing this deal, which makes it even more intriguing that this is not even like, you know, it's not the Liverpool Echo or the Athletic or, you know, it's David Ornstein. So there's got to be some credibility to this. Now, look, it can't happen. It can't happen. If this was Man United, it can't happen. But is it going to happen?
And I think there is this huge domino effect that's going to happen with the Real Madrid presidential elections that's just going to cause massive ramifications, exciting ramifications for the transfer window, because he's clearly going to go for somebody like Alisse.and buy munich are in a similar position he's not for sale but if the player and the money if the player pushes and the money's high what do you do about that because real madrid might say to elisa your wage is way bigger than it is at buy -in and they might say to buy in this is this is the fee this is the fee so looklook, Real Madrid wanted Anthony Gordon. They didn't get him. They're now looking at Rio.I just don't see what the end game is to this.
I suppose the only question I would pose is, if Real Madrid, sorry, if Bayern Munich offered, let's say, £100 million for Rio, who's 17, and, you know, would you do that as a Liverpool fan?
I suppose that's the question, isn't it?I look at it and go, I can't see Liverpool doing this, but everybody's got a price. And would Bayern Munich want to pay £100 million for a 17 -year -old?So what would Bayern Munich's purpose be in this story? So certainly want to watch.Let's wait and see.
I mean, look, we might have people in the comments saying, yeah, I'd do it for 60.I'd do it for 70.But He's ambitious from Bayern Munich, but I just can't see Liverpool doing it.I really can't.And also, I think it gets to a point where you go, look, we're looking to improve, not weaken. We've got no salary.
We've got problems. We've got a new manager. But then, you know, Iriola might say, look, to be honest with you, if I need to compete next season, I don't know whether I can start a 17 -year -old week in, week out.I can use that money to bring players in that I can use.So keep your eye on it.I think there's going to be a huge domino effect on this.
And, you know, Liverpool want Diamonde as well.I mean, could there be something, could there be something there, you know, where they fund that deal by selling Rio?But I just can't see it happening.I really can't.Let me know in the comments with that one.
Also, a bit of news coming in around Alvarez.
So Spanish reports have linked Alvarez to Argentina.Sorry, not Argentina. He is, he is, he is linked to Argentina because he's Argentinian.Alvarez had been lookinglike Barcelona.Atletico Madrid got clever with social media saying here we go for Yamal.

Get started freeI think it was, which was total nonsense. They were just playing the game.Atletico Madrid are now planning on having him next season as the Barcelona move seems to have stalled.Obviously, there is issues between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.Arsenal could have potentially swooped into that avenue, but apparently he's not keen on a move to London, according to Spanish reports. So Alvarez, Arsenal wasn't looking great anyway with the Barcelona links, but even with them stalling, doesn't look like he will be going to Arsenal.
And, you know, again, I think that sort of fits in with what I was talking about with the Premier League, wasn't I?You know, Diamonde could choose PSG over Liverpool.Alvarez was clearly going to choose Barcelona over Arsenal. What's the big signing going to be this summer? Are Premier League clubs going to have to look from within? Are there any external big deals that can be done bringing people into the Premier League?
I feel like with Arsenal, Morgan Rodgers is probably the big deal that they could try and do, but Aston Villa will want a lot of money.I think there's a little bit of reservation around Premier League clubs at the moment.I've certainly sensed it with United, where the prices are very high. Are those prices being pitched unrealistically or are they going to go?Are they going to stay? Are they going to drop?
I mean, even yesterday you had in the Athletic, they were talking about Everton with N 'Jai wanting £70 million.Fernandes from West Ham just been relegated, £70 to £80 million.Lewis Hall, who Newcastle don't want to sell, but maybe wants to leave, £70 million. These are big prices. And I think a few clubs have been sort of taken back by it and gone, we weren't expecting those prices to be that big.So there's so many clubs that need to do stuff.
It's so exciting, but it feels like everyone's a bit tentative at the moment. And some thingsneeds to topple. And I go back to the Real Madrid presidential elections, and I don't know whether that will help.I don't know whether spending £150 million on a lisay helps that market, because I think if you're Everton, you say, well, if a lisay is £150 million, we do want £70 million for NGI.And then that limits what people can do, because if the prices are high, and you've got a budget of, say, £150, £200, £250, you pay high, you might only get two players instead of three or four.
So maybe you then need to sell to capitalise on the market. And I'm not leading back to the Liverpool sale of Rio there to get money in to help them be big in the market. But, you know, if you're buying high, you want to sell high, don't you?And it's about what assets you've got.And also, if I do remember Arnaud Slot, just very, very quickly, I do remember Arnaud Slot talking about sell to buy.Who have Liverpool got to sell to help them buy?
I don't know that Liverpool have any assets. And that's the dangerous thing when you're coming off the back of a season where it's poor, that Liverpool don't really have four or five players that they can sell and make money on, big money on.I mean, we know Curtis Jones is probably heading to Inter, but how much? You know, Liverpool could do with a player that's worth like 80 million that they can sell, which they don't really have. But I still can't see that.I still can't see that.
I still can't see them selling Rio to Bayern. But look, the fact that David Ornstein is talking about it would make you go a little bit like, well, you know, let's wait and see with this one.
