TRUMP FAILS TO SCARE CANADA WITH TARIFF TANTRUM

Hey there Midas Canada viewers, Resisters from all over, Charlie Angus here.So Donald Trump is threatening Canada again.Yeah, he's going after hockey sticks.He's going to target exports of pools made in Canada.He's ranting and raving and saying we're being unfair and we're being mean.So let's break this down.

Well, I think the real reason is it's been a very bad week for Donald Trump.I mean, the guy finally had to pay $5 .8 million to E. Jean Carroll in the sexual assault trial.Yeah.The sitting president of the United States, a sexual predator.The judge who said that the allegations of rape against Donald Trump were substantially true, a rapist.And of course, Donald Trump's trying to stay ahead of the Epstein files where we see horrific allegations in FBI files of rape and abuse of women.

children.This is the kind of guy in the White House right now.So it's been a very bad week because he finally had to pay up.And then, of course, there was the World Cup where anti -fascist Spain showed the world what good sportsmanship is like.And pro -fascist Argentina lost.And Donald Trump had to give out the prize as people booed him and the Spanish players mocked him.

So yeah, what did he do?He turned around and he attacked Canada.He threatened Canada.He's going to impose tariffs on Canada.We're the nastiest people, blah, blah, blah.I think the only fair thing, my friends, is for Donald Trump to start charging Canada rent for all the time we're spending inside his sick brain.

So on today's episode, we're going to break down this latest tariff threat because all the headlines show that it's really, really serious.It's freaking ridiculous.It shows how gutless Donald Trump is, how weak he is, what a predator he is, and how he's trying to act like a tough guy every time his back is up against the wall and Canadians are standing up to him.So we're going to break down the bogus tariff war that he's launched against us.But also on this episode, Lisa Blackburn is going to talk about how wemaintain democracy and accountability.

from the perspective of the people of Nova Scotia, because what we're trying to do with Midas Canada, as you know, we're trying to break down the big issues, but we're trying to also get a conversation going about building democracy from the grassroots up, of restoring accountability, of giving people the tools and the power to hold their politicians to account.So we don't end up with buffoons and monsters like Donald Trump in the White House when a man like him should be in jail.So check this out.Okay, folks, from the beginning, I've been calling Donald Trump the American Caligula.It's because I don't really know of another historic political figure that really matches what we've got in terms of the debasement of Donald Trump, his grotty undermining of the office of the presidency, and of course, his cruelty and his cowardness.So I was thinking, you know, as I was watching Donald Trump ranting to Canada to stop the smoke from the climate fires or he's going to punish us.

It, it really reminded me of Caligula.There's a story where Caligula felt he actually had to prove himself as a great war leader.So he got his entire legions and marched up to the English channel and he was going to take on those wild British tribes.And when he got to the channel and he looked across and he thought, hmm, do I want to stand up to warrior chieftains like Boudicca?Do I want to cross over and take on the Irish?Do I want to go north of Hadrian's Wall and see what the Scots have in store for me?

So what he did, he told his soldiers to take up their guns.and beat the channel waters and then collect all the seashells and he went back to Rome and declared victory over the ocean.That's like what Donald Trump has done this week in terms of threatening Canada on the climate fires, getting all of his sword and coming back looking like an idiot.And that's what we've got in terms of his latest tariff war.So we're going to break it down for you.We're going to leave out for the moment the hockey sticks.

Yeah, the threat that he's going to tariff our hockey sticks.He's targeted wine.He's targeted dairy.He's targeted auto.So let's just go there.Wine.

Yeah, they're really pissed off.The ordinary Canadians like you and me, are boycotting American booze.They say this is outrageous, this is unfair.You know, they throw arbitrary tariffs on all our products and we decide, yeah, hell with you, we're not buying yours.And what do they do?They whine and say we're being unfair.

Now they're putting tariffs on Canadian wine.Great.You know, since the boycott, Sales of Canadian wine have shot through the roof.There's some vineyards here in Ontario that they've had a 600 % increase in sales.And there's another amazing part of this story.I was talking to some people who work in vineyards in southern Ontario who say for the first time they're selling it to Europe.

That never happened before.The reason is, is that Europeans want to support democratic allies.by Canada.So even if we have to wind this up, whatever, throw your tariffs on.We're doing pretty good.Thank you very much, Donald Trump.

You made this possible.Let's talk about dairy.Donald Trump is always ranting about Canada's unfair dairy policies.Well, if you look at the numbers, they export about $850 million worth of dairy into Canada every year.And we only export back about $357 million.That's because Canada is not interested in an export economy for dairy.

Our dairy production is domesticated.this is what drives the United States and this is what drives the right wing insane.We have a system called supply management where the farmers come together, they buy quota and they maintain the system without any subsidies.They maintain super high quality for the products and they're also able to sustain the family farm.So the supply management works in dairy, it works in poultry, it works in turkey, it works in eggs.Now the issue here is that because it's a system for domestic production, we're not having our market flooded.

by American products.So the Americans can sell into Canada to a certain extent just as we can sell into the United States to a certain extent.But they've never even tried to meet their full quota in Canada and they're still ranting at us.But here's the other thing about supply management.Do you remember when Donald Trump was ranting about the price of eggs and how outrageous it was and he was going to bring the price of eggs down and then he had to go beg Denmark as he was threatening Denmark to see if they'd give him eggs.Then he had to go to Belarus of all places.

Can you imagine getting your eggs from Belarus?Well, Canada never had an increase in egg prices at that time because of supply management.And the reason was, and this is important, because of avian flu.The American farms are massive.That's how they maintain their share of the market.In terms of poultry and egg production, we maintain farms that don't have a million birds.

They have maybe 20 some thousand birds.There's over a thousand family farms across Canada based on supply management.So if avian flu hits one of the farms, yeah, It's a tragedy, but it's not a disaster.Whereas when one of those farms with a million birds got hit in the United States and put out of production, that was a serious, serious issue and that's what drove up the cost.So our system is more sustainable.Of course, try telling that to any of the candidates.

right -wing media.They hate supply management as much as Donald Trump, but that's another issue.But here's the thing.Since the avian flu, what has Donald Trump done?Well, he's cut the inspectors.And he's cut the front line research teams who are paying attention to things like avian flu.

This is why you have the outbreak of cyclosporiasis.That's this horrific parasite that's on lettuce that's causing people to get sick all across the United States.So here's the thing, folks.If you see made in USA, don't buy it because you don't even know what the quality is going to be.Yeah, so that's the dairy element.Now Donald Trump saying we're being unfair in auto because we have tariffs.

If you stop production in Canada and you shift to the United States and you think you're just going to come back in, well, we have a reasonable position of putting tariffs on.Donald Trump's outraged about this.He said he was going to destroy our automobile industry.He was going to pull all production back to the United States.He was going to force Canada's auto sector to leave.And so the companies that have left, well, they face tariffs to come back in.

Donald Trump says that's unfair.So what do you do about that?Well, here's the thing.The Honda CRV left Canada and has moved to Ohio.Do not buy the Honda CRV.Same thing with the Jeep Compass.

They moved out of Canada and have moved to Illinois.What we do as citizens is we back up our country.So if you want to pull your products out of Canada and think you're going to get back in free and easy, well Canadians are going to say no.So here's the thing also, buy if you're looking to buy a vehicle, buy the Toyota RAV4.It is an excellent vehicle and it's made in Canada.It's comparable in some ways to the Toyota Corolla Cross, but it's a better vehicle, but the Toyota Corolla Cross is made in Alabama.

So folks, buy Canadian.Find out where it is, buy Canadian.If you see it on the internet,buy Canadian.Maintain the boycott.So when they threaten us on dairy, if you see cheese on the shelves, it's from the United States, say, nah, I don't think so.

If you see greens from the United States, well, I don't want to get diarrhea.No, I'm not going to buy it.If you're looking to invest in a new car, look where it's from.There are vehicles made in Canada.There are vehicles that are made with cross -border trade.That's fair.

But if they want to ship their production out of Canada and go to the United States, well to hell.Goodbye.So long.See you next time.We're not buying your products.And as far as Ontario and BC and Nova Scotia and Quebec wines, buy them.

And also buy the wines of our democratic allies because we have our back.As for Donald Trump, you're an idiot Donald.You're a crook.You've got the Strait of Hormuz closed.You're burning the planet.You're threatening your allies and you know what?

You're staying one step ahead of the courts because you know what?The Epstein files are coming out.So you can rant and you can rave and you can rage against Canada all you want.But we know who you are.You are a pathetic sexual predator who just thinks you're tougher than everyone else.And so you keep coming back and threatening Canada because it drives you insane that people who are polite don't kiss your ring.

Well, here's the thing, Donald.When we look at you, In our imagination, we know exactly who we are and we know exactly what we're going to do to you and your criminal kind.Check this out.Yeah, that's the Canadian spirit right there.And you know what?They tell me the Hanson brothers are from Minnesota.

Maybe so.Minnesota, neighboring state, good people there too.Because you know what?This isn't about the American people.This is about the criminal in chief.So Donald,

keep bringing it on.Keep being an idiot.Keep threatening us.It just makes us stronger in the boycott.Okay, I want to now turn to Lisa Blackburn with her excellent piece on democracy and accountability from politicians in Nova Scotia.Because whether you live in Nova Scotia or wherever you live, you know the importance of holding politicians to account.

Hello, and jealousy might as Canada resisters.Lisa Blackburn here from Nova Scotia.Hey, listen, we have heard it all before.Every election campaign, every new government, every politician, they say the same things.I'm going to listen.I'm going to hear from the people.

Your voice matters.It's become one of those promises that we almost take for granted.So when Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston announced that he would be spending the summer traveling the province, hearing from Nova Scotians, sounded exactly like what you would expect.After all, governments should listen.But before the Premier's listening tour had barely begun, something happened that changed the conversation.Outside his very first event, a protest escalated.

Demonstrators surrounded the Premier's vehicle, the windshield was smashed, police escorted him from the scene, and now RCMP are investigating.So let's be absolutely clear.People have a right to protest.In fact, peaceful protest is an essential part of a healthy democracy.But surrounding someone's vehicle, damaging property, and creating a situation where police have to intervene, that's not protest anymore.It's intimidation.

And that needs to be condemned, regardless of which party happens to be in power.But at the same time, it is worth asking why emotionsare running this high.Because the real story isn't about a broken windshield.It's a growing sense among many folks that they aren't being heard.And that's what caught my attention about this summer tour.

The problem isn't that the premier is listening.It's who he has decided to listen to, because every stop on his summer tour is with a local chamber of commerce.From Yarmouth to Cape Breton, the Premier is meeting with business leaders to discuss Nova Scotia's future.Now, his government says the conversations will focus on affordability, health care, housing, education and long -term care, and also exploring opportunities in defence, energy and economic growth.Now, let's be clear.Business leaders absolutely deserve a seat at the table.

They create jobs, they invest in communities, and they understand the challenges of running a business in today's economy.Their voices matter, but here's the question.Should they be the only voices invited into the conversation?Because when I hear a list like affordability, healthcare, housing, education, I can't help but wonder, where are the nurses, teachers, The parents trying to find childcare.Where are the seniors wondering how they're going to afford yet another rent increase?The students graduating with debt.

How about the disability advocates, the food bank volunteers, labor organizations and environmental groups?Where are the new Canadians?Business owners represent one very important perspective, but they don't represent every perspective.That's an important distinction.The Premier's office says he's speaking with Nova Scotians.And that is true.

Business owners are Nova Scotians.But they're not all Nova Scotians.And in a democracy...that difference matters.Because consultation isn't just about collecting opinions.It's about making sure government hears from people who experience the same problems in completely different ways.

Hey, if you want to understand health care, yes, talk to hospital administrators.but also talk to emergency room nurses, family physicians, talk to paramedics.How about chatting with the patient who's been waiting two years for a specialist?If you want to understand housing, then yes, speak with developers.but also talk to renters and housing advocates and seniors trying to stay in their homes.You need to talk to young families who'll wonder if they'll ever own a home.

The more perspectives that government hears, the better its decisions become.And that's why another announcement from the Houston government caught my attention.Just days before this listening tour began, the government announced that Karen Oldfield would lead Accelerate Nova Scotia, Now, this is a new organization that's been designed to speed up health care innovation and system improvement.This isn't about Karen Oldfield herself.By all accounts, she is an accomplished executive with decades of leadership experience.No question whether she is qualified, but the question is how she got the job, because there was no open public competition.

Government defended the decision by saying it wanted the best person available.Maybe it did.But public confidence isn't built only by making good decisions.It's built by making decisions through processes that people can trust.And that's why process matters.Open competitions, public consultations, freedom of information laws, public hearings, none of those guarantee trust.

outcomes, but what they do guarantee is that power has to explain itself.They reassure the public that everyone had an opportunity, that appointments aren't reserved for insiders, and consultation isn't limited to just those with the greatest access.Hey, the truth is this is not just a Nova Scotia story.This is happening right across North America.Political parties of every stripe are becoming increasingly focused on speaking only to supporters rather than persuading people who disagree with them.Town hall meetings, well, they've given way to stakeholder sessions.

Public debates have been replaced by invitation -only roundtables.Governments hear more often from organized groups with established access.Ordinary citizens, well, they start wondering whether anyone is listening at all.Hey, I spent years in public office, and one lesson stuck with me.Never say no to a meeting.It's a missed opportunity to learn something.

Every meeting taught me something, but no meeting teaches you everything.Business leaders see one side of the province.Healthcare workers see another.Teachers another.Parents another.They're all describing the same Nova Scotia, but they're just looking through different windows.

Good governments don't only ask, who should we meet with today?They also ask, who haven't we heard from yet?Because democracy isn't measured by how many meetings a premier holds.It's measured by whether people believe they had a chance to be heard.Business deserves a seat at the table.No one is arguing otherwise.

But so do the people standing outside the building.Not because every protest is right or wrong.every demand should be accepted, but because governments work best when people believe they have a legitimate way to be heard.Democracy isn't measured by how well we handle agreement.It's measured by how we handle disagreement.And the strongest democracies aren't built by listening only to the loudest voices.
